Intro

Tucked into the side of the mountain above Avoriaz at 1,800m, the Igloo Village (La Village Igloo d’Avoriaz) is part snow bar, part ice/snow art gallery, part restaurant. Every winter, it’s rebuilt and resculpted to house multiple ice/snow sculptures. Think Game of Thrones meets Alpine chic – walls carved with glowing ice sculptures, fur-lined benches, twinkling lights, the cosy hum of mulled wine, fondue and good times.

Visiting

During the day by ski/board, it is easy to pop by as it is on skiers left just after piste marker 4 on the blue piste, Bleue D’Arare. Visits are free to explore the igloo’s nooks and crannies, though you will get a more immersive experience if you stay for a drink inside. If not skiing, it is a 350m up the right-hand side of the piste. Being a blue run it is not to steep, however can be slippery if the snow is hard-packed so poles are a good idea. If visiting at night, it is possible to arrive and leave via a piste basher!

Dinner

The combo of cool but cosy igloo and warm fondue is unforgettable. There are various packages to also include charcuterie, drinks and dessert. It’s a communal, convivial vibe – tables of fellow explorers warming hands around fondue pots, clinking glasses, kids playing and murmurs of excitement.

Core memories

  • Inspiring ice sculptures
  • A meal you will never forget
  • Riding in a piste basher!

A visit feels a bit like going through the wardrobe to discover a scene from Narnia. It is a great pit stop, or a carrot to use when trying to get kids/group to ski/board somewhere. Kids love it. Couples love it. Friends love it. It’s a slice of snowy magic, what holidays in the mountains are made from/ for.
