Morzines best summer restaurants. To make sure there is not too much of a crossover with our winter-oriented restaurant blogs, we are going to first of all focus on 2 restaurants that are under snow in the winter. Then 3 that are in the back country i.e you have to snowshoe or ski tour to them in winter, which will hopefully inspire you to get to them in the winter too.
SUMMER ONLY
Ferme Auberge de Fréterolles (Valley Du Manche, further on from Nyon. 30 minute walk from Lac Min D’Or. Access by 4×4 possible)
Submerged in snow in the winter, in the back country of the Valley Du Manche, is the Freterolle Farm. In the winter, you can find them in the Morzine Wednesday morning Market with the longest queue of any stall. Famed for their quality and value, cheese you can come see the stars of the show, the cows and goats, in their summer home – the high Alpine pastures. A 30-minute walk up from the Lac Min D’Or, and you will feel miles away from everything. You can expect local Savoyard fare such as beignets, omelettes, and healthy salads. Sometimes open in the evenings with yodelling included!
Inaccessible in the winter and therefore not open, in summer, one can drive up here from Chatel or walk over from Lindarets, Montriond. To walk, take the Ardent cable car, then the Chaux Fleurie chair lift. There are 2 main tracks, the higher path goes over the ridgeline, the lower is a farm track with plenty of wild raspberries and blueberries in season. The Bistro has a great view of Lake Montriond and a large outdoor space. Famed for their Berthoud, a cheese dish from neighbouring Abondance and regular candlelit evenings.
BACK COUNTRY IN THE WINTER, EASIER TO ACCESS IN THE SUMMER!
Crapahute (Valley Du Manche, further on from Nyon. Accessible by car/bus)
If we can only choose one place for our family and friends, it is most likely here or the next place (The Tapiaz). It is a great mix of feeling like you have discovered a secret restaurant and, a modern boutique feel. Recently sympathetically renovated and now with optional private dining cabins however, they can get a bit hot in the summer!
The Tapiaz (Encrenaz, 15 minute walk)
Run by a mountain guides couple who specialise in using foraged ingredients! A really special dining experience. Normally opens for reservation only so please do book in advance. L’Ancolie (about 5 minutes further up the track) takes walk-ins if you have forgotten to reserve and is also very good.
Les Chevrelles (Mont Caly, Les Gets. Accessible by car. Also part of our top 5 walks)
A real crowd pleaser. Out of season, they bring people here by the busload as on a good day it has a great panoramic view of Mont Blanc. Famed for their risole potatoes and hearty omelettes. Boasts a large outdoor space and is set in a cute Alpine hamlet.
BONUS ROUND
Hotel Du Lac (Lac Montriond)
Okay, so it is neither backcountry or submerged in snow, however similar to the garden of Rotonde in Morzine it is just great summer alfresco dining vibes! Bon appetite
