Empty pristine pistes, light fluffy snow, what a way to start the year. Welcome to Avoriaz and Morzine January snow!

Secret beaches on coastal holidays, local’s bars on city breaks, travelling always has its secrets and surprises to discover. Why would winter sports holidays be any different? Let’s talk about January in Morzine. The quietest month of the season, the snow lover’s secret! This is when ski lift car parks are void of English number plates and full of locals number plates. All because they know and we know: this is the best time for winter sports.

Heaven may well be January ski days on repeat.

We have had this conversation in many guises – Guests asking if there would be any snow in January? Most recently a group of our friends who live in the U.K. were saying January was the one month they would happily skip. But for us, January is our favourite month and we couldn’t even consider being anywhere else in January!

If you don’t like January where you are, come try January here. Our guests who have come in January have come back more times than any other guests.

  1. The snow. The sun is lower in the sky so has a limited effect on melting the structure of fresh snow so it stays fluffy and light. I.e the snow that makes everything go quiet, it is the snow that lets you study individual flakes as they land on you on a chair lift, the snow that you can clear with your breath like blowing out a candle etc
  2. The quiet pistes. January is a sort of no man’s land between school holidays.
  3. Sets the tone for rest of the year. From burning off the Christmas excess, to supporting New Years resolutions of things like – this year I will be ‘fitter’, ‘happier’ etc A January winter sports holiday can be both catalyst or coach and support these commitments.
