About us

A passion for good food, service with care, delivered sustainably – The Turner Brothers concept

Here at Skiology we are all about one thing, you. To be more specific we are all about you coming back as a repeat guest. Our repeat guest rate is the heart beat of Skiology it is how we judge how we are doing.

Skiology was created around our perception of your needs and through your feedback, Skiology is often adjusted to create a product that is more in line with your actual needs than our perception of them. It is no coincidence that the name Skiology sounds like an art or a science.

[Ski-ohlo-gee] meaning: Defined by our repeat guests.

Our offering is essentially simple, a catered chalet. To inspect the two parts…

Catered

Food is very important on a sports orientated holiday, it is essentially your delicious, nutritious fuel so we use a chef to write our menu, a nutritionist to balance the menu, local suppliers to fulfil the menu and experienced cooks to provide the menu. Recruiting the right people is core to Skiology. We invest a lot of time and money to get the right people on board. Sometime our cooks have often proven themselves working a season for another company or from our catering and hospitality schools partners such as Bournemouth University, Tante Marie, Lausanne Hotel School, Orchards cookery school, or sometimes they are experienced chefs from famous pubs/restaurants/hotels.Chalet

About us

Catered

Chalet

We run chalets that have great piste access as we know from our guests that this is priority number 1, location, location location.

Our offering would perhaps be a little dry if it were as simple as catered+chalet=Skiology since there is no mention of service.

Service with care

In the beginning there was us and our perceptions of what would make your ultimate ski holiday, this is the core of Skiology. Then we met you (our repeat guests) and started to incorporate your ideas too.

Traditionally ski tour operators ask you to fill in a comments form at the end of your holiday to ask if there is anyway that your holiday could have been improved. Which worked great for us until we had a guest write on their feedback from that it would have been nice to have Marmite.

At Skiology, we would always rather be pro-active rather than reactive. It was all our fault, if we had found out sooner then we could have actioned their request during their holiday. So we developed our anonymous comments system. It is much less exciting than it sounds, we simply have an anonymous comments pot in each chalet so if there was anything like Marmite that would have made your holiday 6/5 you can let us know and we can action it. You can of course ask your host directly however if you are anything like Skiology brother Dom and from the “mustn’t grumble” school the pot lets you have you have your say without the grumble.

With our guests help so far we have adopted and rolled out the following suggestions

  • Luxury crisp white linen
  • Ipod docking stations
  • Locally sourced menu items
  • Nintendo Wii’s in all chalets
  • British TV in all chalets
  • Board games in all chalets
  • Local cheese plate on the penultimate night
  • Tea and coffee bought to your door in the morning

This is a smaller sample of what is included on every Skiology holiday you can read more about what is included here

With your help the list will keep growing! Guest or not guest we will happily listen to any ideas so please do get in touch you may even get a prize! Just pop us an email with the subject ‘try this’ to info@skiology.co.uk

There is a caveat, ‘you companies and your blooming caveats’ I hear you say! We will try to action, within reason all individual requests however for us to roll them out company wide, suggestions must be in-line with our company values. For example we are and are advertised to be an environmentally friendly company so if one put in the anonymous comment pot, you should bleach the grout in the bathroom then by all means we will do it, we love sparkly bathrooms however since bleach disagrees with the companies original environmental values we would try to find a more environmental way to roll it out across all of the chalets.

In short we will happily try to make each guests holiday 6/5, we are after all all about you becoming a repeat guest however to adopt a suggestion company wide we would look for an idea that agrees with the original values of Skiology.

Skiology values are, at all times to …

  1. To give service with care
  2. Be passionate about good food
  3. Deliver our product sustainably so that we may continue to the next ice age!

Ski Green

Our stats: 1,000,000 square ft of rain forest protected. 12,872 Trees protected, 13,945 Tonnes of CO2 stored.

The average household in the UK has a carbon footprint of 6 tonnes, we off set the carbon footprint of each chalet by 10 times this amount as a minimum!

How do we protect 1,000,000 square ft of rain-forest?

Every year we have a utilities budget. Whatever we save from it we give…

  • 60% to CoolEarth who use the money to protect trees in the rain-forest. CoolEarth is a very efficient charity for offsetting carbon emissions because they…
  1. Protect huge existing trees rather than replanting whereby you have to wait for the trees to grow to have any effect.
  2. Protect trees in the equatorial rain-forest whereby due to their proximity to the sun, the trees sequest a greater amount of carbon.
  3. Pay indigenous locals to protect the trees which has the dual benefit of keeping indigenous tribes in work and also paying them a fair wage.
  • 40% invest in energy saving tools for the chalets such as energy saving light bulbs, re-insulating loft space with wool, double glazing etc

How do we save on our energy bills?

Awareness seems to have the greatest effect. We let the team know of our intentions to save energy costs both through our investments in energy saving tools and their contribution.

  • Being aware the main cost is heating, whether it is heating the chalet or creating hot water.
  • Rinse plates before they go in the dishwasher with the cold tap
  • If you are only having one cup of tea, boil the water for one cup of tea.
  • Learn how long it takes your oven to heat up.
  • Rather than follow the recipe when it says stick your oven on 180, don’t just put it on, think when you will need it for.
  • Put similar thing in the same place in the freezer every time so you reduce the amount of time with the door open
  • Turn the speakers off if not being used
  • Sweep when possible rather than hoover
  • Re-cycle
  • Turn lights out
  • When a bulb blows replace it with an energy saving bulb
  • Alerting management of any drips

Further environmental contributions

  • Where available we buy as much local and seasonal produce as we can
  • We recycle a lot!
  • Subject to availability, which is most of the time, we use environmental cleaning products
  • All our uniform is fair trade

Essentially we are a very nice company who don’t believe in bull dozing our way to the top of the ski industry, we would rather get there knowing that no-one was harmed in the creation of your Skiology holiday. Here we would like to mention that this is at no extra cost to you. We don’t believe in enforcing our views on others 🙂
